Theme
  • Theme is THEMEssage of a story [1] or what we learn from a story.
  • To figure out theme, students have to synthesize the plot, characters and setting and go beyond the surface of the text.

  • Clues to the theme can be found in the subject of the story, how characters changed and lessons they learned, ideas or motifs that are repeated in the story and what you think the author is trying to teach you.
  • Fables, fairy tales and role plays are all easy, fun ways to introduce and reinforce the concept.

Problem solving
  • Problem solving features a variety of resources on mathematical thinking and reasoning.
  • For many students, this is the part of math that makes them want to hit their head against the wall. They know HOW to do the procedure but deciding when to use it and explaining why they used it is completely elusive. Getting students to generalize, to problem solve and to go back and make sense of their own work is a pretty lofty and incredibly frustrating goal for many teachers. If you're one of the frustrated, we have resources to help. If you are one of the whiz kids, please, please come and help the rest of us.
  • The Word problems article has information on a variety of different strategies that make problems accessible for students and games to make the process less painful.
Classroom management
  • For even the most talented of us, there are years and classes that make us rethink basic elements of our classroom management down to when students sharpen pencils and if there should be a reward activity on Friday. And, of course, what to do when phone calls home aren't cutting it.
  • Investment and incentives feature some creative ideas on motivating the class to make good choices. Consequences and Individual behavior management have ideas on what to do when good choices aren't happening.
  • There are some ideas up there already on creating classroom rules and procedures, visual schedules, physical lay-out, transitions and more.
